Of all the subjects for tattoos, dragons are the most enduring and distinctive and come in a vast assortment of styles.

While women tend to like cutesy baby dragons, men prefer larger, fiercer dragons to be tattooed on their arms, shoulder, backs or legs. They are one of the few popular tattoo subjects which can extend up an arm or down a leg without looking distorted or contrived.   A good artist can improvise and free hand a style of dragon tattoo to conform and wrap around various body parts. The popularity of dragon tattoos is partly due to the vast array of choices of creative artwork and exciting designs being created by artists, but also due to the sharp, projecting elements of the dragon’s fangs, wings and claws which modern tattoo artists can now produce and beautiful designs and striking definition to the tattoo image.

The dragon is  a mythical creature, created by legends and drawn from the imaginations of artists over the ages.  This gives us the various renderings and styles of dragons.

Dragons have a place in both eastern and western history and culture which gives a clue to their popularity. Dragons represent power, fearlessness and danger, and people who choose dragon  tattoos likely feel that yes, they are a bit like that too. In books, dragons are often given a superior,  magical or supernatural power.  In some stories, they are intelligent and tricky, talking in riddles, they can fly, and they are usually are closest to invulnerable and always brave.   All of these qualities are envied by your average human aspires to.

Dragons are often guarding a treasure of gold and booty, jewels, money - also something your average man is attracted to - the monetary bonus.

It is well known that from prehistoric times right through to relatively modern tribal societies that people would adopt a creature as theirs, the symbol of their clan, and so hope to acquire some of its power. The tattoo dragons that modern people love to have on their bodies are simply a manifestation of the urge to be powerful,  better and stronger than the rest.
